Gooseberry Beach

By now some of you will be getting your orders placed while I was away on vacation, & are finding the surprise sample I tucked in for you…

My husband & son & I escaped to Rhode Island for a few days, on the heels of a work-related conference for J. We’d often talked of “doing” Newport & the area, & the elements all fell into place this summer for a quick & easy trip north. We stayed in Providence (at the Providence Biltmore, a gorgeous old beauty of a hotel with the most amazing staff), but took several day trips out of the city to explore the coast.

After hustling about with trips to the zoo, the children’s museum, The Breakers & Green Animals, we were all ready for an afternoon of sloth & indolence, & after braving the Easton Beach for some really spectacular lobster rolls, we headed to the southern tip of Newport Island, to Gooseberry Beach.

Typical us, we hardly took any photos once we got onto the sand. Shame, too, because Gooseberry Beach is lovely, a small arc of sand in a protected inlet, ringed by huge rounded boulders & picturesque seaside mansions. The water is calm & the bottom smooth, perfect for little legs to explore. C spent hours digging in the grey sand, haring up & down the water line & dodging the curtains of red seaweed & kelp that floated in the shallows. It was a perfect pause in what had been a wonderful but busy holiday, & we lingered in the waves almost until sunset.

Gooseberry Beach captures the warm, briny scent that clung to our togs & towels as we drove back to Providence that evening: balmy salt water, sea kelp & spirulina algae, sweet fresh air & a trace of coolness from digging your toes through the wet sand.

Gooseberry Beach is not available for purchase, but may wash up on the shore again next summer…
